Veteran Indian actress Rekha has added another proud moment to her glorious cinematic journey as she received the Red Sea Honouree Award at the Red Sea International Film Festival held in Jeddah. The recognition was presented during the international premiere of the newly restored 4K version of Muzaffar Ali’s classic film Umrao Jaan, a timeless masterpiece that continues to define elegance, poetry and cultural grace in Indian cinema. As she took the stage, Rekha was greeted with admiration and applause, marking a celebration of her contribution to films across decades. The event became even more special as it reunited Rekha with director Muzaffar Ali while the festival showcased the film under its prestigious Treasures section.
During her address at the ceremony, Rekha reflected on her journey, expressing her belief in silence, presence and leading by example. She beautifully stated that she never relied on words to prove her achievements, instead letting her performances speak through emotions. She recalled the teachings of her mother, who encouraged her to live life with grace rather than speak of accomplishments. Rekha shared that even in Umrao Jaan, her heartfelt expressions conveyed more than dialogues could. In her speech, she encouraged people to learn from life without boasting about victories. Her message resonated strongly as she reminded the audience that true influence comes from how one lives, not what one speaks.
The festival’s official social media page shared clips of Rekha’s appearance, calling the moment rare, unforgettable and illuminating for every cinema lover present. The actress expressed gratitude to her fans, colleagues and well-wishers and said she was overwhelmed by the love shown to Indian cinema globally. She added that she did not want to miss such a beautiful opportunity, promising to continue cherishing moments like these. Rekha ended her note with warmth, extending love to everyone and urging the audience to watch Umrao Jaan to feel the silent romance and emotion it carries. She repeated her mother’s words that love, especially silent love, is more expressive than speech.
Umrao Jaan was re-released across India on June 27, 2025 in a restored 4K format, accompanied by a special coffee table book showcasing rare behind-the-scenes images and memories from the making of the film. Director Muzaffar Ali commented that Umrao Jaan was an artistic journey into the heritage of a lost culture and expressed joy that the film is returning to screens for a new generation to experience. The Red Sea International Film Festival is scheduled to run from December 4 to December 13, 2025, bringing world cinema, global storytellers and iconic stars under one celebration platform. Rekha’s honoured presence has become one of the highlights of this edition, creating a historic moment for Indian cinema on an international stage.
