Sunny Deol has urged audiences to watch Batwara 1947 without political or religious bias, describing it as a story about families and humanity. Director Rajkumar Santoshi said the Partition drama presents both courage and brutality without attempting to preach an ideological message.

Sunny Deol Urges Audiences To Leave Politics Aside

Sunny Deol has asked moviegoers to approach his upcoming Partition drama Batwara 1947 without political, religious or ideological assumptions. The actor said the film was created as an emotional story about ordinary families trapped in the violence and uncertainty surrounding the 1947 division of India.

Speaking during a media interaction in Mumbai, Deol said the makers did not alter the characters or narrative to suit the present political climate. He expressed hope that viewers would become involved in the struggles of the characters instead of judging the film through contemporary political debates.

According to Deol, the central tragedy of Partition was that innocent families suffered the consequences of decisions beyond their control. He said audiences who connect with the characters would see their courage, loss and relationships before noticing their religion or nationality.

Rajkumar Santoshi Calls It An Emotional Story

Director Rajkumar Santoshi also rejected suggestions that Batwara 1947 was designed to deliver a political lesson. He described it primarily as an engaging human drama in which religion becomes secondary once viewers begin identifying with the characters.

Santoshi said the film explores the contrasting sides of human behaviour witnessed during Partition. While some people displayed extraordinary bravery, compassion and sacrifice, others committed acts of extreme violence. The filmmaker said both realities are represented without instructing audiences about what they should believe.

The director maintained that his priority was to tell an honest and absorbing story rather than promote an ideology. Deol similarly said the project had been under consideration since around 2010 and was not developed in response to current India-Pakistan relations.

Batwara 1947 Focuses On Families Divided By History

Set amid the upheaval of Partition, the film follows families trying to survive displacement, fear and communal violence. Its narrative emphasises courage, compassion and resilience during a period when millions were forced to leave their homes.

The historical drama features Sunny Deol alongside Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Kanikka Kapur and Khushi Hajare. It is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and backed by Aamir Khan Productions.

Preity Zinta’s appearance marks her return to acting after an extended break, while the project also reunites Sunny Deol and Santoshi after their earlier successful collaborations.

Batwara 1947 Release Set For August 14

Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in theatres on Friday, August 14, 2026, ahead of India’s Independence Day. Promotional material presents the film as a story about choosing humanity and courage when society is divided by hatred and fear.

Deol said the makers were not considering how specific audiences in India or Pakistan might interpret the story while making it. Instead, he wants viewers to remember the film as a portrayal of resilience, family bonds and the suffering experienced by innocent people.

With its sensitive historical setting, the film may attract political discussion after release. However, both Deol and Santoshi insist that Batwara 1947 should first be viewed as a human story rather than a statement supporting either side of the Partition debate.
