Chhaava – Latest Hindi Movie Review

Chhaava – Latest Hindi Movie Review

Plot Overview

Set in the aftermath of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s demise, Chhaava chronicles the reign of his son, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj (Vicky Kaushal). The film explores his relentless battles against the Mughals, his bold invasion of Burhanpur, and his unwavering resistance against Aurangzeb (Akshaye Khanna). Despite betrayal from his own men, Sambhaji continues his fight for Swaraj until his capture and brutal execution—cementing his legacy as an immortal warrior.

Performances

  • Vicky Kaushal delivers one of his finest performances, embodying Sambhaji Maharaj’s courage, resilience, and fury with raw intensity. His transformation into the warrior king is awe-inspiring.
  • Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb is subdued yet impactful, with sharp dialogue delivery.
  • Vineet Kumar Singh as Kavi Kalash is a standout, bringing emotional depth to his scenes with Vicky.
  • Ashutosh Rana as Sarsenapati Hambirrao Mohite adds gravitas, making his presence felt.
  • Divya Dutta (Maharani Soyarabai) is excellent but underutilized.
  • Rashmika Mandanna and Diana Penty struggle with their roles, with Rashmika faltering in language and expressions, while Diana’s performance lacks depth.

Technical Aspects

  • Direction: Laxman Utekar creates a visually grand historical drama but struggles with pacing in the first half.
  • Music: A.R. Rahman’s background score is powerful in war sequences, but the songs, especially the romantic track, feel misplaced. Ajay-Atul might have been a better fit for the era.
  • Action Sequences: Well-choreographed and executed, particularly in the climax where Vicky Kaushal shines.
  • Cinematography: Captures the grandeur of the Maratha empire beautifully, with spectacular battle scenes.
  • Editing: The first half feels disjointed, but the second half gains momentum.

Positives

✅ Vicky Kaushal’s powerhouse performance.
✅ A gripping and emotionally charged second half.
✅ Intense and well-shot action sequences.
✅ The larger-than-life visual appeal.
✅ A powerful climax that does justice to Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy.

Negatives

❌ The first half lacks a strong narrative and feels like a collage of action and songs.
❌ The music doesn’t always complement the film’s historical setting.
❌ Female characters are sidelined.
❌ Some actors struggle with dialect and authenticity.

Analysis

While Chhaava starts off slow and relies heavily on spectacle, it finds its soul in the second half. The film could have benefited from a stronger screenplay that prioritized storytelling over musical interludes. However, it successfully honors the bravery of Sambhaji Maharaj, with Vicky Kaushal’s performance elevating the film to another level. The climax alone makes it a must-watch on the big screen.

Verdict: A grand historical spectacle with a breathtaking second half and an unforgettable lead performance. If you can endure the slow build-up, Chhaava rewards you with an epic conclusion.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
