O’ Romeo: Latest Hindi Movie Review

O’ Romeo: Latest Hindi Movie Review

Plot

O’ Romeo follows Romeo Avtar, aka Ustra, a volatile gangster who doubles as an aide to the Intelligence Bureau. Blood trails follow his every appearance, marking him as both feared and unpredictable. In a city ruled by crime lord Jamal, Romeo operates in a grey zone torn between loyalty, revenge, and his own inner demons.

The narrative shifts when Afsha enters his life. Their relationship becomes the emotional backbone of the story, intertwining romance with revenge. As power struggles intensify, Romeo must confront his violent identity while fighting for love. The film ultimately attempts to blend gangster saga with tragic romance but struggles to balance both.

Overview

After delivering classics like Haider and Kaminey, Vishal Bhardwaj reunites with Shahid Kapoor in O’ Romeo. Expectations were naturally sky-high. The film carries Bhardwaj’s signature poetic storytelling and moody atmosphere, but this time, the indulgence outweighs narrative discipline.

While the first half is gripping and intense, the second half loses momentum as the romance arc feels underdeveloped. The film oscillates between being a gangster epic and a tragic love story, without fully committing to either.

Performances

  • Shahid Kapoor is the film’s biggest strength. As Romeo/Ustra, he commands the screen with intensity. His violent charisma echoes his earlier darker roles, yet he brings fresh nuance to this character. He is especially compelling in the blood-soaked gangster portions.
  • Triptii Dimri delivers a restrained performance as Afsha. She carries quiet intensity but is let down by a screenplay that rushes emotional transitions.
  • Avinash Tiwary as Jamal, the supposed kingpin, lacks the larger-than-life menace required. The writing weakens what could have been a powerful antagonist.
  • The supporting cast Vikrant Massey, Tamannaah Bhatia, Nana Patekar, Farida Jalal, and Aruna Irani remains underutilised.

Technical Aspects

Visually, the film is stunning. Bhardwaj crafts textured, atmospheric frames. The Spain sequences and stylised blood imagery add operatic grandeur.

However, the screenplay is uneven. Emotional arcs feel abrupt, especially Romeo’s transformation from reckless detachment to all-consuming love. The narrative meanders, stretching close to three hours, making pacing a major issue.

The climax, including the bullfight sequence, lacks emotional punch despite symbolic ambition.

Music

The soundtrack carries Bhardwaj’s melodic touch. Songs are poetic and atmospheric, but there are too many. Some tracks slow the narrative rather than enhance it.

Editing

The film suffers from excessive length. Tighter editing could have significantly improved impact. Scenes linger longer than necessary, diluting emotional intensity.

Positives

  • Shahid Kapoor’s magnetic performance
  • Visually rich cinematography
  • Atmospheric background score
  • Powerful first half

Negatives

  • Uneven screenplay
  • Weak emotional payoff
  • Underwhelming antagonist
  • Overlong runtime
  • Romance arc feels rushed

Analysis

O’ Romeo thrives on mood but falters on structure. Bhardwaj prioritises poetic imagery over cohesive storytelling. The gangster portions crackle with intensity, but the romantic transition lacks emotional groundwork. As a result, the audience struggles to fully invest in Romeo’s sacrifice.

The film reflects Bhardwaj’s literary style — beautiful yet indulgent. It has flashes of brilliance but misses the sharp narrative precision that made Haider and Kaminey unforgettable.

Bottomline: Poetic Yet Patchy

Rating3/5
