Bhooth Bangla Movie Review: Akshay Kumar’s Horror Comedy Delivers or Disappoints?

Bhooth Bangla Movie Review: Akshay Kumar’s Horror Comedy Delivers or Disappoints?

Plot

Set in the fictional village of Mangalpur, Bhooth Bangla follows a family that unknowingly steps into a cursed palace tied to a dark folklore about a demon who abducts newlywed brides. What begins as an intriguing horror setup soon spirals into a mix of mythology, family secrets, and forced comedy, as the characters try to uncover and confront the supernatural threat.

Overview

Directed by Priyadarshan and starring Akshay Kumar, Bhooth Bangla attempts to recreate the magic of classic horror-comedies. However, despite the successful track record of the duo, the film struggles with outdated humour and inconsistent storytelling, failing to strike the right balance between scares and laughs.

Performances

  • Akshay Kumar brings his usual comic timing and screen presence, but even his effort feels restricted by the weak script.
  • Rajpal Yadav and Paresh Rawal, known for their comic brilliance, are reduced to repetitive slapstick moments.
  • Tabu delivers a decent performance but is underutilised.
  • Wamiqa Gabbi shows promise initially, though her character lacks depth.
  • Asrani adds some energy but cannot elevate the overall narrative.

Technical Aspects

The film has a decent visual setup with a traditional haunted mansion aesthetic.
However, the execution lacks finesse, and the horror elements feel more staged than immersive.

Music

Apart from one or two tracks like “Ram Ji Aake Bhala Karenge,” the music fails to leave an impact. The background score is overly loud, often substituting noise for genuine tension.

Editing

Editing is one of the biggest drawbacks. The film feels stretched, especially in the second half, with excessive explanations and unnecessary flashbacks slowing down the pace.

Positives

  • Akshay Kumar’s energetic performance
  • Interesting folklore concept
  • A few scattered comic moments
  • Decent production design

Negatives

  • Outdated and forced humour
  • Weak and predictable screenplay
  • Over-explained plot and mythology
  • Poor pacing, especially in second half
  • Underutilised supporting cast
  • Lack of genuine horror or scares

Analysis

Bhooth Bangla had the potential to be a memorable horror-comedy given its premise and the strong collaboration of Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar. However, the film loses its grip due to an identity crisis—unsure whether to be funny or frightening. Instead of building suspense, it relies heavily on loud background music and exaggerated performances. The storytelling becomes tedious as it over-explains every detail, leaving little room for audience engagement. Ultimately, it feels like a missed opportunity that tries to recreate past successes but ends up outdated.

Bottomline: loud but lifeless

Rating: 2.5/5
