Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, played by Vijay, is serving a prison sentence when jailer Srikanth entrusts him with the responsibility of protecting and guiding his daughter Viji. Vetri aims to help her become a strong, independent woman and fulfil her dream of joining the army.
Their lives are disrupted by John Himmler, a powerful corporate villain who uses advanced machines and animatronics to create unrest. When Viji becomes caught in his dangerous plans, Vetri is forced to confront his past and take on the antagonist in a large-scale battle.

PerformancesVijay carries the film with his commanding screen presence, energetic action and emotional commitment. His performance in the quieter flashback portions is more effective than the exaggerated mass sequences.
Mamitha Baiju delivers one of the film’s strongest performances. She brings confidence and emotional depth to Viji, a character written with greater independence and purpose.
Bobby Deol looks menacing but is limited by an unconvincing villain role and an absurdly designed storyline. Pooja Hegde receives little scope beyond a decorative appearance.
Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Revathi, Priyamani, Narain and Nasser offer dependable support, though most of their characters are underdeveloped.
Technical AspectsThe film presents several large-scale action sequences, international locations, aerial battles and machine-based confrontations. However, the inconsistent visual effects reduce the impact of these ambitious scenes.
The cinematography gives Vijay’s mass moments a grand appearance, while the production design supports the film’s commercial scale. The extended Operation MM sequence and the animatronics portions often appear artificial and visually unconvincing.
MusicAnirudh Ravichander’s music is one of the film’s biggest strengths. His energetic background score enhances Vijay’s introduction, action scenes and political moments.
Ravana Mavanda works particularly well on the big screen and delivers the celebratory atmosphere expected from Vijay’s farewell film. The music frequently provides energy when the screenplay begins to lose momentum.
EditingPradeep E Ragav’s editing is uneven. Several emotional and action sequences continue longer than necessary, making the film feel bloated.
The transitions between political commentary, family emotions, flashbacks and international action are not always smooth. The climax is especially prolonged and weakens the excitement created by the interval block.
PositivesJana Nayagan is heavily inspired by Bhagavanth Kesari, particularly in its guardian-and-protégé relationship and the effort to present the young woman as independent and courageous. H Vinoth adds political themes, geopolitical conflicts and advanced-machine warfare, but these additions make the narrative more complicated rather than more engaging.
The film works best when it focuses on Vijay as a principled police officer and his emotional connection with Viji. These quieter portions show the emotional farewell film Jana Nayagan could have been.
Instead, the second half becomes overloaded with cross-border threats, aerial combat, machines and campaign-style speeches. The political references may appeal to Vijay’s loyal followers, but they repeatedly interrupt the storytelling.
As Vijay’s reported final film before concentrating on politics, Jana Nayagan offers enough celebratory moments for fans. As a standalone commercial entertainer, however, it is too long, uneven and self-indulgent to provide the memorable farewell its leading man deserved.
