Bharateeyudu 2 Movie Review

Bharateeyudu 2 Movie Review
  • 15 Jul 2024 12:43 PM

The 1996 blockbuster "Bharateeyudu" returns with the same iconic duo, Shankar and Kamal Haasan, in its sequel, "Bharateeyudu 2." The trailer promised a return of the legendary character to set things right once again. The film features Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha, and Priya Bhavani Shankar in pivotal roles and has just hit theaters. Let's see if it recreates the magic of the original from nearly three decades ago. Here is a review from the US premieres.

Plot Overview

A group of young activists led by Chitra Aravindan (Siddharth) fights corruption by creating viral video content on social media. As the corruption becomes unbearable, they start a trend asking the famous Bharateeyudu, aka Senapathy (Kamal Haasan), to return. Senapathy, who has been in exile, makes a comeback with a plan. The film unravels what happens when he returns and how he tackles corruption.

Performances

Kamal Haasan attempts to recreate his iconic Senapathy character and delivers a commendable performance, saving many lackluster scenes with his presence. However, his efforts are undermined by a weak plot.

Siddharth plays a lengthy supporting role that feels artificial. Priya Bhavani Shankar and others perform adequately, while Samuthirakani and Bobby Simha stand out in their roles. SJ Suryah has a minor role, hinting at a larger part in a potential third installment. Rakul Preet Singh’s role is more of a guest appearance, and she performs well within its limits.

Technical Aspects

Shankar’s films are known for their grandeur, and "Bharateeyudu 2" is no exception. The visuals, especially in the Calendar song and other scenes, are extraordinary, supported by good production values and fine cinematography. However, the music is a major setback. Anirudh’s background score fails to leave an impact, unlike his work in Kamal Haasan’s "Vikram."

Positives

  • Kamal Haasan’s performance
  • Visuals and grandeur

Negatives

  • Weak plot
  • Lack of emotional depth
  • Disappointing second half
  • Unimpressive background score and songs

Analysis

Shankar, once known for delivering sensational films, has struggled with recent projects. Attempting to create a sequel to the iconic "Bharateeyudu" was a bold decision, but Shankar fails to deliver this time. While the original film was a blend of emotions, sacrifice, and a powerful message against corruption, the sequel lacks these crucial elements.

"Bharateeyudu 2" focuses more on Senapathy’s grand return and his unique punishments than on the core fight against corruption. The story loses pace and interest even after Senapathy’s arrival. The background music and songs, which were strong points of the original, are underwhelming in the sequel. The screenplay feels outdated, and the repeated corruption cases add to the monotony.

The latter half of the film is aimless and chaotic, with artificial emotions and dragged-out drama. Senapathy is reduced to an action hero with an overlong unicycle chase and unnecessary action scenes. The reasons behind his actions lack sense, leaving the character poorly written.

In conclusion, "Bharateeyudu 2" fails to match the strong story and emotional depth of the original. Senapathy’s character, once a symbol of justice, is now a mere stuntman. The sequel ends on a cliffhanger, teasing a third installment, but fails to deliver a satisfying experience.

Bottom Line:  Boring Comeback

Rating: 2/5
