Texas Original has opened a new medical cannabis facility that significantly expands its operational capacity as Texas continues to broaden access under the state’s Compassionate Use Program. The newly launched site, located along FM 969, represents a major step forward for the company, consolidating every stage of production under a single roof and positioning the organization for long-term growth as patient demand increases.

The 75,000-square-foot facility is nearly ten times larger than Texas Original’s former headquarters and is designed to handle the full lifecycle of medical cannabis production. From initial cultivation to final distribution, the process now takes place entirely in one integrated location. Company officials say this approach enhances quality control, operational efficiency, and scalability while meeting the strict regulatory requirements governing medical cannabis in Texas.

According to Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation Chief Executive Officer Nico Richardson, the facility allows the company to manage each phase of production internally, starting with plant cultivation and continuing through extraction, manufacturing, testing, packaging, and distribution. He said the unified structure ensures consistency and accountability throughout the process, which is especially important in a highly regulated medical environment. Richardson noted that the new site can support up to 20 times the capacity of the company’s previous South Austin location.

The facility includes a hybrid greenhouse dedicated to plant cultivation, specialized manufacturing laboratories for extraction, processing, and refining, as well as on-site testing labs to verify product quality and compliance. Additional areas are designated for packaging, dispensing, distribution, and delivery logistics, enabling Texas Original to streamline operations while maintaining regulatory oversight at every step.

Richardson said the facility was designed with the future of medical cannabis in Texas in mind, anticipating expanded access and broader product offerings. He explained that the infrastructure allows the company to scale production as regulations evolve and patient eligibility grows, reducing the need for significant new construction as demand increases.

The opening comes as Texas expands its Compassionate Use Program following the passage of House Bill 46 during the most recent legislative session. The new law broadens qualifying conditions and permits a wider range of medical cannabis products, marking one of the most significant updates to the program since its inception. Richardson said the legislative changes address long-standing gaps in patient care and allow providers to better meet medical needs that were previously underserved.

The Texas Compassionate Use Program was first established in 2015 with a narrow focus on pediatric epilepsy patients and primarily high-CBD products. Since then, the program has gradually expanded to include additional qualifying conditions and formulations. Richardson said Texas Original has grown alongside the program, adapting its offerings to serve a wider patient population as regulations have evolved.

As one of the state’s earliest licensed medical cannabis providers, Texas Original expects demand to continue rising as awareness and access increase. The company believes the new facility provides the operational runway needed to support future growth while maintaining compliance with state regulations. Richardson said the focus now is on gradually activating capacity as the program develops, ensuring the infrastructure keeps pace with patient needs.

State regulators have so far awarded nine conditional licenses under the Compassionate Use Program, with three additional licenses expected to be issued in April. Industry observers say the combination of expanded licensing, broader eligibility, and increased production capacity signals a new phase for regulated medical cannabis in Texas, with facilities like Texas Original’s playing a central role in that transition.
