India’s first AI university to begin operations in Amaravati from February

The artificial intelligence revolution is rapidly transforming the global landscape, reshaping industries, economies, and educational systems at an unprecedented pace. Recognizing the urgency of adapting to this technological shift, the Andhra Pradesh government has taken a decisive step by launching what is set to become India’s first dedicated Artificial Intelligence university. The university is scheduled to begin operations in Amaravati from February 19, marking a significant milestone in the country’s higher education and technology ecosystem.

The groundwork for this ambitious project was initiated in 2025, with the state government laying a clear roadmap for establishing a specialized institution focused exclusively on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. With the inauguration now approaching, Amaravati is poised to become a focal point for AI-driven education and innovation in India.

A key highlight of this initiative is the collaboration between the Andhra Pradesh government and global technology giant Nvidia. The partnership is expected to bring world-class expertise, advanced infrastructure, and industry-aligned curriculum to the university. This collaboration reportedly took shape after Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh held discussions with Nvidia’s leadership last year, which resulted in a shared vision to create a cutting-edge AI education hub in the state. The proposed AI University is being viewed as a pilot and flagship project, not just for South India but for the entire country. It aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world AI applications, equipping students with skills that align with global technological demands.

Once fully operational, the university is expected to play a crucial role in empowering the youth of Andhra Pradesh by providing advanced training in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and related fields. By nurturing a skilled workforce, the state hopes to position itself at the forefront of the AI revolution and prepare its population for future job markets driven by automation and intelligent systems.

The long-term vision extends beyond education. Officials believe that the AI University could help transform Andhra Pradesh into a major AI hub for India, attracting investments, startups, research initiatives, and global collaborations. This would significantly boost the state’s economy while also strengthening its human capital.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has previously been credited with pioneering landmark educational institutions such as the Indian School of Business and NALSAR in Hyderabad during the undivided Andhra Pradesh era. With the launch of the AI University in Amaravati, he is once again being seen as a key figure in ushering in a new wave of future-focused education. If executed as envisioned, this initiative could become a game changer for Andhra Pradesh and set a benchmark for AI education across India.
