South Shore Line Storm Damage Suspends South Bend-Michigan City Service

South Shore Line storm damage continued to affect riders on Friday, June 12, 2026, after severe weather damaged rail infrastructure in northwest Indiana.

The commuter rail agency said in an official service update that trains would resume Friday between Michigan City, Indiana, and Millennium Station in downtown Chicago, including Monon service. However, service remained suspended between South Bend and Michigan City while crews continued clearing storm damage.

South Shore Line Service Update After Indiana Storms

The disruption followed severe storms that moved through northern Illinois and northwest Indiana on Thursday evening, June 11, 2026. The National Weather Service said several tornadoes occurred across parts of northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana during the late afternoon and evening, with notable damage reported in areas including Merrillville and Hebron, Indiana.

South Shore Line officials said earlier that storm damage affected tracks, overhead wires and poles, preventing trains from continuing east beyond East Chicago. The latest update narrowed the remaining disruption to the South Bend-Michigan City section of the route.

What Riders Need to Know

Passengers traveling between Chicago and Michigan City were advised to arrive at boarding stations on time, listen for announcements and check reader boards for updates. Riders traveling to or from South Bend were still affected because no South Shore Line service was operating between South Bend and Michigan City.

The disruption matters for commuters and regional travelers who rely on the electric-powered route connecting downtown Chicago, northwest Indiana and South Bend. Storm damage to wires and poles can slow restoration because crews must inspect and repair critical rail power infrastructure before full service can safely resume.

The storm-related disruption also came just before planned weekend changes in Chicago. South Shore Line passengers were already advised that Museum Campus and Van Buren Street stations would have no service on Saturday, June 13, 2026, and Sunday, June 14, 2026, because of scheduled busing connected to construction near Millennium Station.

Riders should continue checking official South Shore Line service alerts before traveling, especially those planning trips between South Bend, Michigan City and downtown Chicago.
