The Ford Bronco recall covers 565,691 model-year 2021-2026 SUVs after insufficient wiring-harness protection was linked to possible shorts and engine fires. Dealers will add protective sheathing at no cost, while owners can check affected VINs through NHTSA.
Ford Motor Co. is recalling 565,691 Bronco sport utility vehicles in the United States because an engine-compartment wiring harness can chafe, expose internal circuits and short to ground, creating heat or sparks that may ignite nearby materials.
The recall covers model-year 2021 through 2026 Broncos, including Bronco Raptor vehicles. Ford estimates that 1% of the recalled population has the defect.
Wiring harness defect and warning signs
Ford said movement between the wiring harness and surrounding components, combined with inadequate abrasion protection, can wear through the harness covering.
A driver may first notice smoke entering through the air vents or a dashboard warning before flames appear on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Ford reviewed 15 possible fire incidents
Ford opened a broader investigation on Thursday, June 18, 2026. By Monday, July 13, 2026, the automaker had identified 15 incidents in which evidence indicated a fire may have originated from the engine-compartment wiring harness.
Ford said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the condition.
Dealers will add protective sheathing
Ford or Lincoln dealers will install convolute sheathing and abrasion tape on the affected wiring harness at no charge. The added protection is intended to prevent future chafing, exposed circuits and electrical shorts.
Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed from Monday, August 24, through Friday, August 28, 2026. Ford has not issued a “do not drive” or “park outside” advisory in the recall filing.
How Bronco owners can check their VIN
Affected vehicle identification numbers became searchable through NHTSA on Thursday, July 23, 2026. Ford’s recall number is 26S55, and the NHTSA campaign number is 26V468.
Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 or NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. The recall will now move through owner notification and free dealer repairs, with protective harness materials added to vehicles included in the campaign.
