Microsoft Offers Voluntary Exit Packages to 60,000 Employees

Microsoft has offered voluntary exit packages to approximately 60,000 employees, representing more than a quarter of its global workforce. The programme covers selected teams in India, the United States, United Kingdom and Canada as the technology giant adjusts staffing while expanding its artificial intelligence operations.

Microsoft Voluntary Exit Programme Eligibility

Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the Voluntary Exit Offer on October 26, 2026.

The programme is available to eligible employees at internal level 70 and below in participating organisations across four countries.

Not every department is included. Microsoft said eligibility depends on business priorities, customer commitments and workforce requirements.

The company employed approximately 223,000 full-time workers worldwide as of June 30, 2026.

Microsoft Employee Buyout Package Details

Eligible employees can choose to leave the company with financial assistance and career planning support.

Microsoft will communicate individual package details directly to qualifying staff.

Employees are expected to make their decisions by early December, with departures scheduled for December 31.

The company has not announced a target number of departures, and receiving an offer does not mean an employee must leave.

Microsoft AI Investment and Workforce Changes

The voluntary exit programme comes as Microsoft continues expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The company is investing heavily in data centres, cloud computing, advanced processors and services that support growing AI demand.

These investments have increased pressure to manage operating costs while maintaining competitiveness across existing businesses.

Microsoft has not stated that savings from the voluntary exit programme will directly finance its AI infrastructure expansion.

Microsoft Previous Layoffs and Retirement Offers

The latest initiative follows other workforce adjustments announced earlier in 2026.

Microsoft previously introduced a voluntary retirement programme for eligible US employees and later announced approximately 4,800 job cuts in July.

The earlier retirement offer attracted participation from more than 30% of eligible employees.

Unlike compulsory layoffs, the new programme allows eligible workers to decide whether to accept the available exit terms.

Microsoft Employee Decisions and Next Steps

For employees, the decision may depend on compensation, career opportunities, financial commitments and future employment plans.

Microsoft said the programme aims to provide greater flexibility while allowing teams to adapt to changing business requirements.

The company is also scheduled to publish its quarterly financial results on October 28, offering investors further insight into spending and business performance.

For now, the confirmed development is an offer to approximately 60,000 employees, not 60,000 confirmed job losses.
