Israel has expanded its war beyond Gaza, striking the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday in a military operation dubbed “Summit of Fire.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that the airstrikes were carried out to eliminate senior Hamas leaders, who it claims have long directed operations abroad and were central to orchestrating the October 7, 2023 massacre.
The military said the strike was executed in coordination with the ISA (Israel Security Agency) and specifically targeted members of Hamas’s political bureau living in exile. According to an Israeli military official speaking to AFP, the operation involved “precise air strikes” on multiple sites in Doha. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir had previously vowed that Hamas leaders abroad would not be spared, declaring that Israel would reach them wherever they hide.
The attacks shook Doha as loud explosions and thick plumes of black smoke filled the skies. While the IDF confirmed the strikes, it did not immediately provide casualty figures. The incident comes as ceasefire negotiations and hostage talks, in which Qatar has played a key mediator role, face uncertainty following this escalation.
Qatar has long hosted Hamas leaders and facilitated talks with Israel and international stakeholders. Tuesday’s strike, however, marks a dramatic turning point that could derail diplomatic efforts aimed at easing the Gaza conflict.
Qatar strongly condemned the Israeli airstrikes, calling them a “cowardly attack” and a “flagrant violation” of international law. Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said the assault directly endangered the lives of Qatari citizens and residents, labeling it a “criminal assault” that undermines regional stability. He added that investigations were underway, and security forces were taking measures to safeguard the affected areas.
On the other hand, Israel doubled down on its stance. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich hailed the attack, emphasizing that “terrorists have no immunity” and praised the IDF and Shin Bet for a “perfect execution.” The White House confirmed that Israel informed Washington in advance of the operation, highlighting the potential for far-reaching geopolitical implications.
