Bangladesh Initiates Judicial Process to Extradite Sheikh Hasina

India has confirmed that Bangladesh’s request to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently under examination through established judicial and legal processes. The matter was discussed during recent talks between Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with officials stating that consultations will continue with all stakeholders.

Sheikh Hasina, 78, has been residing in India since August 2024 after leaving Bangladesh following widespread anti-government protests that led to the collapse of her administration. Dhaka has sought her extradition over charges linked to actions during the protests, with reports indicating that a domestic tribunal had convicted her in connection with the crackdown on demonstrators. India has maintained that it is closely monitoring the situation while addressing the request strictly within the legal framework.

The extradition issue comes at a sensitive time in India-Bangladesh ties, as both countries navigate political changes in Dhaka. While the situation presents legal and diplomatic challenges, both sides have signalled their intent to continue dialogue and sustain bilateral engagement.
