The AAPI Tampa convention brought more than 1,000 physicians of Indian origin to Tampa, Florida, for a four-day gathering focused on global health, medical innovation and public service.

AAPI Tampa convention focuses on global healthcare
The 2026 annual convention of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin included scientific sessions, leadership forums, cultural programs and discussions on the future of healthcare. Organizers highlighted the role of Indian-American doctors in India-United States healthcare collaboration, medical education and humanitarian outreach.
Nita Ambani, founder and chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, received AAPI’s Humanitarian Award. Ambani praised Indian-origin physicians in the United States for their contributions to medicine and called for deeper India-U.S. cooperation in healthcare.
Reliance Foundation partnership announced
Ambani announced plans for a partnership between AAPI and the Reliance Foundation focused on rural healthcare, preventive medicine, women’s and children’s health, telemedicine, medical education, disaster response and humanitarian outreach.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor welcomed delegates, presented Keys to the City to Ambani and AAPI President Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, and proclaimed Thursday, July 2, 2026, and the rest of the July 4 weekend as “AAPI Day” in Tampa.
AAPI Global Foundation launches
The convention also marked the launch of the AAPI Global Foundation, a nonprofit initiative aimed at supporting healthcare innovation, medical research, humanitarian projects and physician leadership worldwide.
Foundation Chairman Dr. Jagdish Gupta pledged $100,000 toward cancer prevention efforts. Planned initiatives include cancer prevention, rural mammography screening, CPR training, HPV vaccination, medical student research networks and stem cell donor drives.
The event included a Women’s Forum with leaders from medicine, government, business and sports, including former tennis champion Sania Mirza, and an address by spiritual teacher Didi Krishna.
The convention ended with a leadership transition, as Dr. Vijay Maurya became chairman of the AAPI Board of Trustees and Dr. Meher Madavaram was welcomed as incoming president. Founded in 1982, AAPI represents physicians and medical students of Indian heritage across the United States.
