June 21 marks the 11th International Yoga Day, a global celebration of yoga’s profound impact on physical, mental, and emotional health. Initiated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, this day recognizes yoga as a powerful tool for promoting global wellness. For 2025, the theme announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi “Yoga for One Earth, One Health” highlights yoga’s unifying and healing power across humanity and nature.
One area where yoga has consistently shown results is in reducing belly fat, a common concern for many. Unlike intense cardio workouts, yoga offers a holistic, low-impact approach to strengthening the core, improving digestion, and promoting fat metabolism. Here are five of the most effective yoga poses you can practice regularly to target belly fat and build core strength:
1. Boat Pose (Navasana)
Boat pose directly activates your abdominal muscles. Sit on the mat, lean back slightly, lift your legs, and extend your arms forward. Hold this position while engaging your core. It helps in toning the belly and building stamina.
2. Plank Pose (Phalakasana)
One of the most efficient full-body poses, plank primarily strengthens the abdominal region. Begin in a push-up position, keeping your body straight from head to toe. Hold the pose for 30–60 seconds. Daily practice can enhance core endurance and burn fat.
3. Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana)
This gentle backbend stimulates the abdominal organs and stretches the belly area. Lie on your stomach, place palms under your shoulders, and lift your upper body. Along with reducing belly fat, it boosts digestion and posture.
4. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana)
Bridge pose is excellent for activating the glutes and core muscles. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat, then lift your hips while keeping shoulders grounded. This pose supports lower back strength and abdominal toning.
5. Warrior Pose (Virabhadrasana)
Known for improving strength and balance, Warrior pose also tones the abdominal area. Stand with your legs wide apart, turn one foot outward, and bend the front knee while extending both arms. Hold the pose to engage your core and legs simultaneously.
Integrating these yoga poses into your routine, especially when paired with mindful breathing and a healthy diet, can lead to sustainable fat loss and overall vitality. On this International Yoga Day, take a step toward holistic health by embracing these powerful postures that not only reduce belly fat but also enhance your mental and physical well-being.
