Golden Globes 2027 Guidelines: AI Use Allowed, But Human Creativity Must Remain Central

The Golden Globes has set new guidelines for the 2027 awards, drawing a distinct line on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in film submissions. In an effort to adapt to rapidly advancing technology, the organisers clarified that while AI tools can be used during production, human creativity must remain at the core of any entry for it to be eligible.

Announced on Thursday, these updated rules stipulate that the use of AI, including generative AI, will not automatically disqualify a submission. However, AI is restricted to a supportive role, with human direction, artistic judgement, and authorship being the primary drivers of the work. Any AI use in the final product must be disclosed, including any alterations made to a performer’s voice or likeness.

The mandatory disclosure requirement reflects growing concerns in the industry, particularly those sparked by the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, where AI emerged as a contentious issue. According to the new guidelines, submissions will be assessed based on how much of the creative direction and decision-making originates from credited human contributors. Essentially, AI can assist in the process, but it cannot be the author of the work.

Specific rules have been laid out for acting categories. Performances will only be considered eligible if they are predominantly based on the credited performer’s original work. AI can enhance or support a performance, but must not override the performer’s creative input. Furthermore, any use of AI in a performance must be authorised by the performer themselves.

The Golden Globes has drawn a strict line against misuse. Any submissions involving unauthorized digital replication of an actor’s likeness, voice, or biometric data, regardless of whether the performer is credited, will be disqualified.

For non-performance categories such as direction, writing, music, and animation, the rules remain consistent: human creators must provide the core creative contributions, with AI playing a supplementary role. These updated rules come as part of the Golden Globes’ ongoing efforts to adapt to an evolving entertainment landscape and mark the return of comedian Nikki Glaser as the host for the third consecutive year.
