India Japan expand strategic partnership framework
India and Japan have announced a 16-point roadmap aimed at significantly expanding their Special Strategic and Global Partnership, marking a shift toward deeper cooperation in economic security, advanced technology and energy resilience. The initiative was unveiled following the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held in New Delhi.
Focus on technology, security and energy transition
The roadmap places artificial intelligence, clean energy transition, resilient supply chains and critical minerals at the core of bilateral engagement. Alongside the framework, both sides released three key policy documents focused on economic security, AI collaboration and energy resilience, signalling a structured approach to long-term cooperation.
Leadership discussions strengthen bilateral alignment
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across emerging sectors including mobility, financial services and advanced manufacturing. Officials said the agreements reflect a shared effort to align economic growth with strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Economic security becomes central pillar
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, economic security will now function as a foundational pillar of the partnership. Both countries emphasised that their relationship is built on mutual trust, shared values and converging strategic interests, particularly in an increasingly uncertain global economic environment.
Concerns over global supply chain vulnerabilities
The initiative also addresses growing concerns around economic coercion, export restrictions and non-market practices that have disrupted global supply chains in recent years. Critical sectors such as minerals, semiconductors and strategic technologies were highlighted as key areas requiring coordinated resilience between the two nations.
Expanding cooperation in emerging sectors
The roadmap outlines broader collaboration in artificial intelligence development, digital infrastructure, green energy systems and industrial innovation. Both countries aim to strengthen technological ecosystems while reducing dependency risks in sensitive supply chains.
A long-term strategic alignment
Officials described the roadmap as a long-term blueprint for deepening India-Japan ties beyond traditional trade relations. With growing geopolitical uncertainty and rapid technological transformation, both sides view enhanced cooperation as essential for regional stability and sustained economic growth.
