Australia to Ban YouTube for Kids Under 16 by 2025, Violators Face $50M Fine

Australia has announced it will ban YouTube for users under the age of 16 starting December 2025. The move comes as part of a broader crackdown on children's access to social media platforms, with YouTube now joining TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat on the restricted list. The decision reverses an earlier exemption for YouTube and follows mounting pressure from the eSafety Commissioner, citing the platform’s exposure risks for minors.

The law, which mandates platforms to take all reasonable steps to prevent access by under-16 users, comes with a hefty penalty fines of up to $49.5 million for non-compliance. A government report on age-verification tools is expected soon to guide implementation. While YouTube argues it is primarily a video-sharing service and not traditional social media, critics highlight its algorithm-driven recommendations and community features as key concerns.

A regulator's recent survey revealed that 37% of Australian minors reported encountering harmful content on YouTube the highest among all platforms. In addition, nearly 68% of kids aged 10 to 12 regularly use YouTube, raising alarms among educators and child safety advocates. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced strong support, stating that the government is acting in the interest of protecting children’s mental well-being and online safety.

The ban will not restrict teachers or parents from using YouTube in educational settings. However, the new rules are expected to spark tensions with Alphabet, YouTube’s parent company. The company has already begun lobbying efforts in Canberra and is reportedly preparing a legal response, although no official challenge has been confirmed. This development marks another major face-off between Australia and big tech, recalling previous clashes over digital regulation and media rights.
