In a rapid escalation of tensions, Iran struck a US tanker in the northern Persian Gulf hours after a US submarine torpedoed the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, killing 87 Iranian sailors. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack on the American tanker, which was reported to be on fire by Iranian state media. This move comes as Iran's foreign minister warned the US would "bitterly regret" its attack on the Iranian vessel, located off the coast of Sri Lanka.
The attack marks a significant escalation in the conflict, expanding it beyond the already volatile Persian Gulf and into the Indian Ocean. The IRIS Dena, a frigate returning to Iran from naval exercises in India, was struck by a torpedo from a US submarine. The attack, which took place in international waters, left over 60 Iranian sailors missing, while 32 were rescued, including the ship's commander. The attack has raised the stakes in the region, with over a thousand Iranians killed in recent clashes, and six American soldiers also losing their lives.
The torpedo strike, which is believed to have involved the Mark-48 heavyweight torpedo, marked the first time since World War II that a US submarine has sunk a ship using a torpedo. This attack on Iran’s naval force comes amid escalating strikes by the US, including attacks on Iranian naval bases and a container ship converted into a drone aircraft carrier.
Iran, in response, has vowed to take action against the US for the sinking of the IRIS Dena. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi labeled the US strike an "atrocity" and declared that Iran would avenge the attack. In recent days, Iran has ramped up its retaliatory actions, launching drone and missile strikes on US military bases and embassies, as well as Israeli targets, causing significant damage and casualties.
With both nations now engaged in a tit-for-tat cycle of ship attacks, and with further military actions in the air, the conflict is rapidly spiraling into a broader military engagement, extending from the Gulf to the Indian Ocean. This marks a critical moment in the ongoing confrontation, with major global implications for regional security and international relations.
