CM Vijay Launches Singappen Force For Women Safety In Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has launched the Singappen Special Force, a dedicated all-women police unit aimed at improving women’s safety and strengthening preventive policing across the state.

The initiative was rolled out in Chennai on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. In the first phase, 70 units of the force will begin operations across Tamil Nadu with 140 sub-inspectors and 420 constables. Each patrol vehicle will have an all-women team consisting of one sub-inspector, two head constables and a driver.

Singappen Force To Focus On Prevention

The Singappen Special Force has been created to prevent crimes before they happen, especially in public places, crowded areas, educational institutions, workplaces and public transport.

The force will focus on offences such as stalking, sexual harassment, attempted abductions, public harassment, lewd comments and other crimes targeting women and children. The unit is expected to support existing women police stations by handling field-level preventive action.

Drone Patrols And Modern Equipment

One of the major highlights of the initiative is the use of drone-based patrols to help monitor vulnerable areas and improve response during emergencies. Chief Minister Vijay said drone patrolling would be introduced to prevent crimes against women, making the initiative a technology-driven safety measure.

The force will also be equipped with body-worn cameras, live-streaming systems, communication tools, patrol vehicles and other surveillance equipment. These tools are expected to help the police respond faster and monitor field activity more effectively.

2,545 Posts To Be Created

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned 2,545 posts for the Singappen Special Force, including inspectors, sub-inspectors and constables. The strength of the force will be increased in phases, and the government has allocated ₹354 crore in the first phase for the initiative.

The special unit will be headed by Inspector General of Police K. Bhavaneeswari and will function under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister. Personnel recruited for the unit will undergo special training to handle women’s safety-related cases and preventive policing duties.

Women Safety Becomes Key Focus

Speaking at the launch, Vijay said the safety and dignity of women and children were important markers of a government’s success. He also linked crimes against women with the spread of drugs and said strict action would be taken against those who threaten women’s safety.

At the same time, he cautioned that police must act carefully and ensure that innocent people are not wrongly implicated while taking swift action against offenders.

The launch of the Singappen Special Force comes at a time when women’s safety continues to be a major public concern in Tamil Nadu. With all-women patrol teams, drone surveillance and modern monitoring tools, the initiative is expected to strengthen field-level policing across the state.
