Thirteen people were killed and 66 others were injured in an explosion at a gas facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
According to preliminary information released by authorities, the people killed included Indian and Pakistani nationals. Officials have not disclosed how many victims were from India or provided a complete nationality-wise breakdown of the deaths.
Indians Injured in Ras Laffan Gas Facility Explosion
The injured included citizens of India, Qatar, Pakistan, Tanzania, Guinea, Nepal, Bangladesh, Kenya and Nigeria. Officials said none of the reported injuries was considered life-threatening.
The explosion occurred during restart operations at the Barzan domestic gas supply facility. Emergency teams brought the resulting fire under control, and QatarEnergy said the incident created no environmental threat.
A technical investigation has been opened to determine what caused the explosion and whether any operational or safety failures contributed to the accident.
Qatar Rules Out Sabotage
Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, said on Monday, June 22, 2026, that authorities had classified the explosion as an industrial accident. Aggression and sabotage had been ruled out, he said.
Officials also said the incident did not affect Qatar’s liquefied natural gas export capacity, Ras Laffan Port operations or international gas supplies.
Ras Laffan is Qatar’s primary energy-processing and export center and employs workers from India and several other countries. Further information about the Indian victims and assistance being provided to affected families had not been released at the time of reporting.
Authorities are expected to provide additional details after the identities of the victims are formally confirmed and the technical investigation progresses.
