Delhi Pollution Crisis 2025: Supreme Court Warns Masks Not Enough as AQI Hits Severe Levels

Delhi woke up to another morning covered in thick smog, with air quality remaining in the ‘severe’ category for the third consecutive day. The Supreme Court expressed deep concern over the worsening air pollution and advised senior lawyers to attend hearings virtually, stressing that wearing masks alone would not provide sufficient protection against the toxic air.

Justice PS Narsimha questioned why lawyers were appearing in person despite the availability of virtual hearing facilities. Why are you all appearing here? Please avail the virtual facility. The pollution will cause permanent damage, he said, adding that even masks are not enough.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) levels across Delhi, with Bawana recording the highest at 460 and NSIT Dwarka at 216. Other major monitoring stations like Anand Vihar, Chandni Chowk, and ITO also showed AQI readings above 400, posing severe health risks even to healthy individuals.

The top court also demanded accountability from Punjab and Haryana for their handling of stubble burning, a key contributor to the pollution spike. Both states were directed to present detailed data on preventive measures within a week. Chief Justice BR Gavai emphasized the need for concrete action to combat the recurring air quality crisis.

With visibility dropping sharply and pollution levels rising, Delhi residents continue to face severe health challenges. Experts warn that without strict enforcement and long-term policy measures, the capital’s air quality may deteriorate further, posing serious risks to public health and the environment.
