A major fire tore through the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic, at approximately 11:00 a.m. Atlantic Standard Time on Friday, June 19, 2026, forcing authorities to evacuate about 1,690 guests.
Dominican emergency authorities confirmed that Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian tourist, died in the fire. Three people were transported to medical facilities, while six others were treated at the scene for injuries and symptoms that included smoke inhalation and breathing difficulties.
Bayahibe Resort Fire Triggers Large Emergency Response
The fire spread through sections of the beachfront resort on the Dominican Republic’s southeastern coast. Guests were transferred to nearby hotels and other accommodation facilities while firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
At least 11 firefighting units participated in the emergency response, according to local reporting citing Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center.
Wind and Palm Roofing Contributed to Fire’s Spread
The Emergency Operations Center said preliminary observations indicated that strong winds and the flammable palm roofing used on parts of the resort helped the flames spread rapidly.
Authorities said the fire was eventually brought under control, but its exact cause remained under investigation. A technical commission was expected to examine how the blaze began and moved through the property.
The nearby Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace resort was not damaged and continued operating normally. Authorities also said tourism activities elsewhere in Bayahibe were not affected.
The incident is expected to draw attention to evacuation planning and fire-safety protections at Caribbean resorts that use palm or thatched roofing, particularly in areas exposed to strong coastal winds.
