Texas school voucher program draws 274,000 applications by March 31 deadline
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas’ first statewide school voucher-style initiative has drawn overwhelming interest, with more than 274,000 applications submitted for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program by the deadline of Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The volume of applications significantly exceeds the program’s initial capacity of approximately 90,000 students, setting the stage for a highly competitive selection process.

The TEFA program, established by the Texas Legislature in 2025, allows families to use public funds for a range of education-related expenses, including private school tuition, homeschooling, tutoring, and other services. The $1 billion initiative represents one of the largest school choice expansions in the United States and reflects growing national debate over education funding models.

State officials confirmed that applications surged in the final weeks leading up to the deadline, with earlier data showing more than 256,700 submissions between Tuesday, February 4, 2026, and Saturday, March 29, 2026, before totals climbed further. A majority of applicants, about 77%, indicated a preference for private school enrollment, while roughly 23% selected homeschooling or alternative education options.

Because demand exceeds available funding, Texas law requires prioritization. Students with disabilities and families from low- and middle-income households are expected to receive preference during the review process. More than 34,000 applicants reported a disability status, placing them within priority tiers.

The Texas Comptroller’s Office will now begin reviewing submissions, with funding decisions expected to be communicated to families starting in early April 2026. Selected families must confirm their school choice by mid-July 2026, and private schools must verify acceptance before funds are distributed. Initial payments, covering at least 25% of approved amounts, are scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2026, with additional disbursements planned for October 2026 and April 2027.

The application window itself was extended by two weeks following a federal court ruling related to a lawsuit over school eligibility, allowing additional families to apply before the final deadline.

Geographically, applications were concentrated in major metropolitan regions, including Houston and North Texas, while younger students—particularly those in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten—accounted for a significant share of demand.

Although not all applicants will receive funding in the initial round, state officials indicated that additional opportunities may arise if spaces open or further funding becomes available. Even for those selected, participation depends on acceptance into participating schools, more than 2,000 of which have already enrolled in the program.

The program’s launch underscores strong demand for expanded education options in Texas, while also signaling continued policy debates as implementation moves forward.
