Iran’s Leadership Crisis Deepens as Mojtaba Khamenei Remains Unconscious

Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly-appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, is currently unconscious and receiving medical treatment in Qom, Iran. The report, based on intelligence sources from the US and Israel, revealed that Khamenei sustained severe injuries in the same airstrike that killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on February 28, 2026. Due to his current condition, Mojtaba Khamenei is unable to be involved in the decision-making process of the country, which has raised concerns regarding Iran's leadership in the ongoing crisis.

The diplomatic memo, shared by US-Israeli intelligence agencies with their Gulf allies, highlighted that Khamenei’s health is critical, and he remains incapacitated for any political activities. Since the attack, Khamenei has not been seen in public, fueling rumors about his potential death. However, Iranian officials have continued to affirm that Khamenei is still in charge of the country despite confirming his injuries from the February airstrike.

The report marks the first time the location of Mojtaba Khamenei has been disclosed since he assumed power. He is reportedly staying in Qom, a central city regarded as sacred in Shia Islam, approximately 87 miles south of Tehran. His location had remained a closely guarded secret, especially after the attack that claimed his father’s life.

Iran’s leadership crisis has been compounded by the absence of the Supreme Leader, leading many to question the future course of the country’s political and military actions. While the Iranian government continues to assert that Khamenei is overseeing national decisions, the lack of visible leadership has made many anxious about the regime's stability and future direction.

Iranian state television aired statements attributed to Khamenei, and a video showing him inspecting military strategies was recently released. Despite these efforts to maintain the appearance of authority, the country’s leadership appears to be in turmoil. The tragic assassination of Majid Khamenei, Iran’s intelligence chief, has further escalated tensions. Mojtaba Khamenei condemned the assassination, stating that such acts of violence would not weaken Iran’s resolve. As Iran continues to grapple with the political vacuum left by the incapacitation of its Supreme Leader, both the international community and domestic entities are closely watching the unfolding developments.
