Indian among deportees sent to Costa Rica under U.S. third-country policy
Costa Rica received a second group of migrants deported from the United States on Friday as part of a bilateral agreement that allows the Central American nation to accept third-country nationals expelled under U.S. immigration policy. The group notably included one Indian national among deportees from multiple countries, underscoring the global scope of the program.

Under the agreement, signed in March by Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves and U.S. Special Envoy Kristi Noem, Costa Rica has committed to accepting up to 25 deportees per week. The policy is part of a broader U.S. strategy to manage migration flows by transferring certain individuals to partner countries outside their nations of origin.

The latest group consisted of 30 deportees, including eight Costa Ricans, eight Brazilians, and individuals from Romania, China, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Ireland, India, Vietnam, and Belarus. This follows an earlier group of 25 deportees who arrived at Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose on Saturday. Costa Rican migration authorities, working with the International Organization for Migration, provided initial processing and assistance upon arrival.

Officials said deportees may opt into the Assisted Voluntary Return program, which supports travel back to their home countries. Others may apply for legal residency in Costa Rica under humanitarian categories through the standard immigration process.

Costa Rica is one of several countries across the Americas and Africa that have entered agreements with the United States to accept deportees from other nations. The arrangements highlight an expanding U.S. approach to migration enforcement that relies on international cooperation to address border pressures while offering limited resettlement options for affected individuals.
