Trump Announces Pause in Maritime Escort Operations in the Strait of Hormuz

In a recent update, President Donald Trump announced a temporary pause in the United States’ maritime escort operation in the Strait of Hormuz, while confirming the continuation of a blockade. The decision follows progress in diplomatic discussions with Iran, aimed at finalizing an agreement. Trump explained on Truth Social that the blockade would remain active, but the project known as “Project Freedom,” which involves the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, would be paused temporarily. This decision came after significant military success in the region and calls from countries such as Pakistan for a de-escalation period to gauge whether an agreement could be reached with Iran.

Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, supported the shift in focus, stating that the combat phase of US operations against Iran had concluded. Instead, Washington's new approach centers on securing maritime navigation through the region, minimizing risks of escalation while diplomatic talks with Iran continue. This transition aims to stabilize shipping routes, which are crucial for global trade and security.

As part of these efforts, the United States, together with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar, introduced a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council. The proposal calls for Iran to cease attacks on shipping lanes, stop laying sea mines, and be transparent about its naval activity. Rubio emphasized that the international community must unite to support this resolution, which is designed to ensure the free movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global maritime passage.

Despite a previous veto from China and Russia on a similar resolution, Rubio expressed confidence that global powers should back this more restrained approach. The US and its allies argue that it is in the interest of all nations to prevent economic chaos caused by disruptions to international waterways, underscoring the importance of maintaining stability in this vital region.
