West Bengal continues to grapple with escalating political violence as another life was lost in a targeted attack. Chandra, the personal assistant to BJP’s leader of opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, was shot and killed in what authorities are calling a pre-planned assassination. The incident took place on the evening of [insert date], near Madhyamgram, a locality in West Bengal. According to eyewitness reports, the victim was traveling by car when a bike-borne assailant pulled alongside and shot at him at point-blank range. The assailant, described as an expert, fired two rounds before quickly fleeing the scene, suggesting the attack was meticulously planned. The car’s driver was also injured in the attack. Chandra was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Eyewitness Account of the Murder An eyewitness who was near the crime scene described the harrowing moment: "Just as Chandra’s car crossed mine, it suddenly stopped midway, and a bike-borne person came and started shooting on the left side of the car. The person seemed to be an expert and fled immediately. It appeared to be pre-planned. The shots were fired at point-blank range. I heard the sound of two rounds," the eyewitness said. The incident occurred between 10:30 PM and 11 PM, about 200 to 300 meters from a hospital. Political Allegations and Reactions Suvendu Adhikari condemned the attack as "a cold-blooded and pre-planned murder" and reassured his supporters that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. He called for peace among BJP workers in the wake of the incident. Agnimitra Paul, a prominent BJP leader, linked the murder to political motives, suggesting it was a result of the anger within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following their electoral defeat. “This is perhaps a consequence of Mamata Banerjee’s defeat in Bhabanipur,” Paul said, further noting that CCTV footage from the area was being analyzed to identify the attackers. She also highlighted Chandra’s trusted role within the BJP, adding, “He was like a brother to our MLAs and handled several important responsibilities.” Paul questioned why Chandra, who had no direct political role, was targeted, emphasizing the shock and outrage in the community. She also pointed out a separate incident involving a BJP booth worker who was attacked and hospitalized around the same time. TMC's Response and Call for Investigation Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders condemned the murder but refrained from commenting on any political motives. The TMC has called for a CBI investigation into the killing, urging for a thorough inquiry. However, they did not address the specific allegations made by BJP leaders. Rising Post-Poll Violence in West Bengal The murder of Chandra adds to the growing list of casualties from post-poll violence in West Bengal. Since the state’s recent election results were announced, violence has claimed at least four lives across various regions, including Kolkata, Udaynarayanpur, Nanoor, and Jalpaiguri. The ongoing violence has raised serious concerns over the political climate in the state. As the investigation into Chandra’s murder unfolds, the people of West Bengal and political leaders alike await answers regarding the growing unrest and the political motives behind these violent acts.

Australia has launched public hearings on May 4, 2026, into the Bondi Beach attack and the rising wave of antisemitism, aiming to uncover both the causes of the deadly shooting and the broader social impact. The inquiry focuses on the tragic events of December 14, 2025, when a mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach left 15 people dead, including a child. Authorities have confirmed the attack was driven by antisemitism, placing it at the center of a wider national concern. The hearings, taking place in Sydney, are part of a royal commission examining hate crimes and social cohesion. Witnesses appearing before the panel include victims’ families, community leaders, and individuals who have faced antisemitic abuse. Some participants have been granted anonymity due to fears of retaliation, underlining the seriousness of the situation. Victim testimonies highlight growing fear One of the first witnesses, Sheina Gutnick, whose father was killed while confronting the attackers, described receiving disturbing messages after the incident. She said the aftermath made her feel that antisemitism had become more open and normalized. Her testimony reflects a broader concern within the Jewish community about safety and acceptance in Australia. The commission is being led by former High Court judge Virginia Bell and will proceed in three phases. The first phase examines the scale and nature of antisemitism across the country. The second phase will investigate the circumstances of the Bondi Beach attack in detail, while the final phase will explore how online platforms may be contributing to radicalisation and the spread of hate. Another witness shared concerns about long-term safety, explaining that after decades of living in Australia, they are now questioning whether the country remains secure for future generations. Such accounts point to a shift in public sentiment that the inquiry aims to address. An interim report released earlier by the commission proposed 14 recommendations, including stricter firearm laws and increased security for Jewish gatherings and events. Officials have also noted that international tensions may be influencing domestic incidents, adding complexity to the issue. The hearings are expected to provide critical insights into the Bondi Beach attack and help shape policies to address antisemitism, strengthen security, and restore confidence in social harmony.

Star Wars Day, observed on May 4, is a global fan-driven celebration inspired by the famous line from Star Wars, “May the Force be with you.” The phrase sounds similar to “May the Fourth be with you,” which is why fans chose this date. Today, May 4 represents a worldwide celebration of storytelling, imagination, and the lasting popularity of the Star Wars universe. The origin of this tradition dates back to 1979, when a British newspaper used the phrase “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie” to congratulate Margaret Thatcher after she became Prime Minister. At the time, it was simply a witty headline. However, as Star Wars gained a massive global following, fans recognized the clever connection and began using it to mark the day. Over time, the celebration grew organically without any official planning. Fans across different countries started sharing content, organizing events, and rewatching Star Wars movies. What began as a small idea eventually gained global attention. Recognizing its popularity, Lucasfilm and later The Walt Disney Company joined in to support and promote the celebration. Today, May 4 is celebrated with great enthusiasm worldwide. Fans dress up as their favorite characters, participate in themed events, and revisit iconic moments from the films. Theme parks host special activities, and online platforms see a surge in discussions, quizzes, and fan creations. In a notable moment, astronauts aboard the International Space Station even celebrated by watching Star Wars while orbiting Earth. What keeps Star Wars Day popular every year? The continued success of Star Wars Day lies in its ability to bring people together. New generations discover the story, while longtime fans relive their favorite memories. The celebration also extends to May 5, known as “Revenge of the Fifth,” inspired by Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, where attention shifts to darker characters. Star Wars Day stands out because it was created by fans, not institutions. Its growth reflects the power of shared passion and creativity. What started as a simple play on words has evolved into a global cultural event that continues to thrive year after year.

DOJ footage shows missed security dog alerts before shooting at WHCD A newly released video from the Justice Department has uncovered crucial details about the attempted shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD). The footage reveals that a security dog alerted to Cole Tomas Allen’s presence twice, but these warnings went unnoticed, allowing the suspect to fire at a Secret Service officer before being detained. The video, shared by US Attorney Jeanine Pirro on social media platform X, shows Allen walking through the Hilton Hotel the night before the attack. In a chilling moment, the security dog reacts to Allen as he passes, signaling potential danger. However, despite these two distinct alerts, the handler fails to acknowledge the dog's warning, allowing Allen to continue his movement through the hotel. The footage captures the suspect armed with a shotgun, heading toward a security checkpoint where he shoots a Secret Service officer. The video highlights how Allen was moving through the hotel, appearing to “case the area” before the shooting. He can be seen walking through corridors and even passing through a gym in the hours before the more dramatic scene. The footage reveals Allen approaching the magnetometer checkpoint, where he charges past uniformed officers and agents, carrying a long-barrelled firearm. In a slow-motion clip of the video, a Secret Service agent fires three times at Allen, although police have confirmed that Allen was not shot. Instead, Allen was tackled and detained after a brief struggle with security personnel. The officer who was shot survived the attack, thanks to the protection provided by his ballistic vest. Pirro, in her statement, clarified that there is no evidence that friendly fire caused the shooting. She emphasized that the footage had already been provided to the US District Court for further legal action. Allen, a 31-year-old from California, has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison. This latest video offers crucial insight into the incident, showing the missed warnings and the sequence of events that allowed the shooter to carry out the attack.

On Turkey’s bustling border crossing with Iran, inflation and shortages are driving a surge in cooking oil trade as economic pressures deepen inside Iran. At the Kapikoy crossing near Van in eastern Turkey, merchants and travelers described a growing demand for basic goods, particularly cooking oil, as Iranian consumers grapple with soaring prices and limited supply. Shopkeepers at the crossing said demand has risen sharply in recent days, with dozens of individuals carrying multiple large bottles of oil back into Iran. The trade has become a small but vital source of income for both Turkish vendors and Iranian buyers seeking to resell or use the goods domestically. Rising food prices and subsidy reforms reshape consumer behavior Iran’s inflation crisis, projected by the International Monetary Fund to approach 70 percent in 2026, has significantly eroded purchasing power. Cooking oil prices surged after the government removed subsidies on certain essential imports in January, a move intended to reduce state spending amid ongoing sanctions. Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, have defended the policy, arguing that subsidies were being exploited without effectively lowering prices. However, many consumers report difficulty finding affordable cooking oil in local markets, forcing them to look beyond the country’s borders. Border trade becomes a lifeline for struggling households For some Iranians, cross-border trade offers a modest financial cushion. Individuals interviewed at the crossing described buying cooking oil in Turkey for just over $10 per five-liter bottle and reselling it in Iran at slightly lower prices than domestic shops, earning small profits. The Kapikoy crossing has remained one of the few consistent links between Iran and the outside world during recent disruptions, including airspace closures and an ongoing internet shutdown that has limited access to information within the country. Economic strain intensifies amid conflict and job losses Beyond inflation, Iran’s economy is facing additional strain from conflict-related disruptions and layoffs. The country’s minimum wage, roughly $108 per month, has failed to keep pace with rising living costs, leaving many households under severe financial pressure. Recent protests driven by economic discontent have been met with government crackdowns, adding to an atmosphere of uncertainty. While the government has introduced monthly cash payments equivalent to about $7 to offset rising costs, analysts say the measure is unlikely to significantly ease the burden on most families. Limited relief despite growing cross-border activity Although the increase in cross-border trade highlights the resilience of individuals adapting to economic hardship, the overall impact remains limited. The modest profits generated by transporting goods like cooking oil do little to offset the broader challenges posed by inflation, unemployment, and supply shortages. For many Iranians, the scenes at the Turkey-Iran border underscore a deeper economic crisis, where even basic necessities require creative—and often difficult—solutions to obtain.
