Tension in Bangladesh has sharply escalated after India closed its visa centres in Rajshahi and Khulna, prompting violent protests and warnings of further unrest. Demonstrators clashed with security personnel near the Assistant High Commission of India in Rajshahi after attempting to march toward the compound. Protesters accused India of injustice and went so far as to threaten bloodshed, saying they would use swords or other weapons if necessary. The situation has alarmed authorities on both sides, especially with the closure directly impacting thousands seeking Indian visas.

India shut down the centres citing serious security concerns, though operations resumed in Dhaka after a one-day pause. The centres in Rajshahi and Khulna, however, remain closed with appointments postponed and rescheduling promised later. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi summoned Bangladesh envoy Riaz Hamidullah to express deep concern over extremist elements allegedly planning unrest near Indian missions. India urged Bangladesh to ensure full safety of its diplomatic posts as per international obligations, emphasising the seriousness of the situation.

Bangladesh authorities deployed heavy security around the protest zone to prevent escalation. Officials confirmed that five Indian Visa Application Centres operate across Bangladesh, including Chattogram and Sylhet, alongside Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna. Protesters gathered outside Rajshahi’s visa office, angered by delays and closures, even as police tried to disperse the crowds. Meanwhile, India continues to monitor the situation closely as tensions remain high, raising fears that further clashes could disrupt diplomatic relations and affect cross-border travel plans for thousands of applicants.
