The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 PM IST on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in the Sakti district while workers were on their lunch break, triggering panic and a large-scale emergency response. Officials confirmed that 33 workers sustained injuries, with at least 23 reported to be in critical condition and receiving intensive medical care.
Authorities stated that four workers died at the scene, while six others succumbed to their injuries while being transported to medical facilities, bringing the confirmed death toll to 10. Earlier in the day, Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur had reported nine fatalities and 15 injuries, indicating that the situation worsened as rescue and recovery efforts continued.
Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion was caused by the rupture of a pipeline carrying hot water, resulting in severe burn injuries among workers present at the site. Initial reports had pointed to a boiler-related blast, and officials are continuing efforts to determine the exact cause.
Injured workers were transported to hospitals in the neighboring Raigarh district, including OP Jindal Fortis Hospital, where medical teams are closely monitoring their condition. Authorities confirmed that several victims remain in critical condition.
Rescue operations have since concluded, with officials stating that all affected workers have been evacuated from the site. Senior administrative and police officials arrived shortly after the explosion to oversee emergency response efforts.
State authorities have ordered a formal investigation into the incident. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the event as “heart-wrenching,” offering condolences to the victims’ families and directing officials to ensure immediate and comprehensive medical care. He also stated that a thorough and impartial probe would be conducted, with strict action promised against those found responsible.
Meanwhile, local political leaders have called for accountability and compensation for victims, as plant management stated it is cooperating with authorities and prioritizing medical support for those affected while the investigation continues.
