Ram Mandir donation row puts temple management under scanner

Misra seeks overhaul of Ram Mandir management

Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Construction Committee chairman Nripendra Misra has called for a major restructuring of the Ram Mandir management system amid the ongoing controversy over alleged misappropriation of donations in Ayodhya. His remarks have added weight to growing concerns over how offerings, cash, jewellery and other valuables are being handled at one of India’s most important religious sites.

Misra said the issue is not only about money but also about the faith of devotees who contribute to the temple with deep belief. According to him, the controversy has exposed gaps in supervision, accountability and implementation of procedures. He argued that a temple receiving large public donations and massive daily footfall cannot depend only on informal arrangements or volunteer-driven systems.

Informal system under question

Misra pointed out that a large number of people are involved in the functioning of the temple complex, but many responsibilities are not backed by clear written orders or fixed accountability. He said duties are often assigned informally, which creates room for confusion, weak monitoring and possible misuse. For an institution of this scale, he suggested that experienced professionals should be brought in to manage daily operations.

He also highlighted that standard operating procedures were reportedly available for donation handling and counting, but the issue appears to be poor implementation. These guidelines covered detailed steps, including checks during entry and exit from counting areas. If such systems were not followed properly, the problem becomes one of enforcement rather than absence of rules.

Donations, cash and valuables need stronger checks

The controversy has raised serious questions about the handling of different categories of offerings. Devotees often place cash, coins, jewellery and precious items in donation boxes. When these are opened and counted, each category requires strict documentation, proper security and transparent supervision.

Misra’s concern is that the existing process did not have enough control at every stage, from collection and counting to transfer of valuables and cash to banks. He also indicated that supervision involving bank and trust representatives may have remained too informal for such a sensitive process. In a high-faith institution, even a small lapse can damage public trust.

SIT probe and political pressure

The issue has already turned into a political flashpoint in Uttar Pradesh. Opposition leaders have questioned the handling of donations, while the Ram Temple trust has denied wrongdoing and maintained that accounts are audited. The Uttar Pradesh government has formed a three-member Special Investigation Team to examine records, donation registers, CCTV footage and related procedures.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed for restraint until the probe is completed and said the truth will come out through investigation. The real test now is whether the inquiry only addresses the immediate allegations or also leads to long-term administrative reform. The Ram Mandir is not an ordinary institution. It carries religious, emotional and national significance for millions of devotees. That makes transparency more important, not less. Misra’s call for professional management is a necessary warning: faith can bring donations, but only strong systems can protect them.
