Delhi Police Deny CJP Protest, 57 Metro Stations Face Curbs
New Delhi, October 9, 2026: Delhi is preparing for major security restrictions ahead of a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and the All India Students' Association (AISA) at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10. Delhi Police have denied permission for the demonstration, while authorities are considering restrictions at 57 Metro stations to manage possible crowds and maintain public order.
The proposed demonstration seeks the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid growing criticism of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Protest organisers have questioned the transparency of the revision process and raised concerns about its potential impact on eligible voters.
With large gatherings expected, security has been tightened across Central Delhi. The preparations could affect Metro passengers, railway travellers and motorists moving through important parts of the national capital.
Delhi Police Deny Permission for Jantar Mantar Protest
Delhi Police said the CJP failed to submit its application within the required timeframe. Under the existing guidelines, organisers must apply for permission at least 10 days before holding a demonstration.
According to police officials, the application was submitted on October 7, just three days before the scheduled protest. Authorities therefore rejected the request and warned that proceeding without permission could lead to legal action.
Police also cited previous alleged violations of protest guidelines and restrictions imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Despite the denial, the CJP and AISA have continued calling for a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest centres on concerns surrounding the SIR exercise. Organisers have alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions and are demanding greater accountability from the Election Commission.
The Election Commission has maintained that electoral roll revision is intended to improve the accuracy of voter records. However, opposition groups and activists have raised questions about the process and its implications for voting rights.
The disagreement has become a significant political issue, with several opposition parties expected to support the demonstration.
Delhi Metro Restrictions and Security Arrangements
Ahead of the planned gathering, Delhi Police have requested the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to close entry and exit gates at 57 stations beginning at 9 PM on Friday, October 9.
The proposal also includes reducing train frequency at selected stations, depending on the security situation.
Although some reports have described the restrictions as confirmed closures, other reports indicate that the final implementation decision rests with DMRC. Commuters should therefore check official Metro announcements for the latest operational information.
The proposed restrictions are intended to limit large crowd movements towards Jantar Mantar and other sensitive locations in Central Delhi.
Security arrangements extend beyond Metro services. Authorities have coordinated with railway officials over disruptions affecting services connected to New Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station.
Additional measures include increased police deployment, barricades, surveillance and restrictions on vehicle movement in selected areas.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has made approximately 23,000 Central Armed Police Forces personnel available to assist Delhi Police between October 8 and October 12.
Security officials are also monitoring important roads, railway stations and entry points into the capital as they prepare for the possibility of large gatherings.
The arrangements could create difficulties for daily commuters, particularly those travelling through Central Delhi or using public transportation during the weekend.
Passengers are advised to confirm Metro services and railway schedules before travelling. Motorists should also anticipate possible diversions and delays near areas under heightened security.
As October 10 approaches, the situation remains closely watched. While protest organisers continue to press their demands, Delhi Police have maintained that public gatherings must comply with the applicable rules and restrictions.
The coming hours will determine how the proposed demonstration and transport restrictions affect movement across the national capital.
