Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a conversation with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian and expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in West Asia, highlighting the growing impact of the conflict on civilian lives and infrastructure. During the discussion, Modi emphasized the need for restraint and reiterated India’s long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective path toward resolving regional disputes.
According to the Prime Minister, the intensifying hostilities in the region have resulted in significant damage to civilian infrastructure and the loss of innocent lives. He stressed that maintaining peace and stability in West Asia is crucial not only for regional security but also for the broader global community. India, he said, continues to advocate for peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue among all parties involved in the conflict.
Modi also underlined that the safety and security of Indian nationals living in the region remain a key priority for the Indian government. In addition, he pointed out the importance of ensuring the uninterrupted movement of goods and energy supplies, which are critical for global trade and economic stability. The Prime Minister reiterated that India remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting stability across the region.
The conversation between the two leaders took place at a time when tensions in West Asia have intensified following military developments involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Retaliatory actions and military exchanges have heightened concerns about a broader regional conflict, particularly in Gulf countries where a large number of Indian nationals reside and work.
Meanwhile, the Indian government informed Parliament that nearly 9,000 Indian nationals are currently present in Iran. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita stated that the Indian Embassy in Iran has issued advisories urging citizens to remain vigilant. Indian nationals have been asked to exercise caution, stay updated through local media reports, and maintain regular contact with the embassy to ensure their safety during the ongoing developments in the region.
The government has also reiterated that it is closely monitoring the situation and remains prepared to take necessary measures to safeguard Indian citizens abroad while continuing diplomatic engagement to support peace and stability in West Asia.
