Tamil Nadu Gets New DGP
In a major Tamil Nadu DGP appointment news update, senior IPS officer Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal has been appointed as the new Director-General of Police and Head of the Police Force. The 1994-batch IPS officer will replace Sandeep Rai Rathore and is set to lead the State police at a crucial time.
Two-Year Tenure Confirmed
Aggarwal is currently serving as DGP in the Border Security Force in Delhi. The Tamil Nadu government has written to the Union Home Ministry to relieve him from his central posting. As per Supreme Court guidelines in the Prakash Singh case, the new Tamil Nadu police chief in 2026 will get a minimum two-year tenure.
Why This Appointment Matters
The appointment of Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal as Tamil Nadu DGP is significant because of his wide experience in policing and investigation. He earlier served as Chennai Police Commissioner during the COVID-19 period and launched initiatives such as Drive Against Drugs and Kaaval Karangal. The former Chennai Police Commissioner appointed DGP has also served in Madurai, Tirunelveli, CBI, BSF and election-related police roles, making his elevation one of the key Tamil Nadu police leadership changes of 2026.
