Former US President Donald Trump launched a scathing online tirade against Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani after Mamdani secured a major victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary. Mamdani, who currently serves in the New York State Assembly representing Astoria, Queens, won 43.5% of the vote with 90% of ballots counted. His success marks a significant milestone for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, sparking both celebration among his supporters and criticism from his opponents.
Taking to his social media platform shortly after the results were made public, Trump ridiculed Mamdani, calling him a “100% communist lunatic.” He accused the Democratic Party of going too far left and warned that Mamdani’s win signaled a concerning direction for the country. Trump, known for his fiery rhetoric, also attacked other key progressive figures, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Chuck Schumer. Referring to the group as “AOC+3” and calling them “dummies,” Trump claimed the Democratic Party was losing its grip on reality. He added that even Schumer, whom he mockingly referred to as “Cryin’ Chuck,” was “groveling” over Mamdani. Trump concluded his remarks by labeling the event as a “big moment in the history of our country,” though he framed it as a dangerous one.
In a follow-up post, Trump continued his offensive, mocking the Democratic Party’s recent political setbacks and offering sarcastic advice for their future. He suggested that the Democrats nominate “low IQ” Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett for President and give key cabinet roles to AOC and her progressive colleagues. According to Trump, such decisions, combined with Mamdani’s rising influence, would be disastrous for the country.
Zohran Mamdani’s win has highlighted the growing popularity of progressive politics in New York City. Since being elected to the state assembly in 2021, he has championed bold reforms focused on income equality and social welfare. His mayoral campaign included ambitious proposals such as launching government-operated grocery stores to combat food insecurity, implementing a freeze on rent hikes in rent-stabilized housing, and making public buses free to ride. These plans are expected to be funded through a $10 billion tax increase on corporations and wealthy residents.
Mamdani has also made headlines for his foreign policy positions, particularly his vocal support for Palestinian rights. He has been a prominent participant in pro-Palestinian protests and has openly backed the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. His stance has made him a controversial figure, especially among pro-Israel advocacy groups. In late 2024, he stated that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were to visit New York City, he would call for his arrest in alignment with arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court.
Despite the backlash, Mamdani's supporters view him as a principled and necessary voice for progressive change in one of the world's most influential cities. His grassroots appeal, policy-driven agenda, and clear ideological stance have attracted younger voters and those disillusioned with establishment politics. As the general election approaches, Mamdani is likely to face strong opposition, but his primary win proves that his message is resonating with a significant portion of the city’s electorate.
Trump’s criticism, while harsh, also reveals the increasing attention being paid to local elections and their national implications. His attacks may energize both sides of the political spectrum, with conservatives viewing Mamdani as emblematic of extreme left-wing politics and progressives seeing him as a symbol of bold change. With the political climate in the United States continuing to polarize, Mamdani’s journey from a state assemblyman to a frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race is likely to remain in the spotlight.
