India has reported a modest surge in Covid-19 infections, with 203 new cases and four deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). While officials assure the public that most cases are mild, the total active caseload now stands at 3,961 as of June 2, 2025. Several key states are showing higher-than-average infection numbers, prompting renewed advisories on safety measures.
Kerala, Delhi, Maharashtra Lead Case Numbers
Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases, with 1,435 infections currently. Although the state recorded only 35 new cases in the last 24 hours, it also reported the death of a 24-year-old woman with serious comorbidities. Since the beginning of the year, Kerala has logged seven Covid-related deaths.
Delhi is witnessing a noticeable spike with 47 new cases reported on Sunday, raising its active caseload to 483. A 22-year-old woman with a pre-existing lung condition became the fourth fatality in the capital during this recent wave. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has reiterated that the capital is prepared, with 19 hospitalizations and the majority recovering at home. Hospitals have been advised to ensure adequate bed and oxygen supplies.
Maharashtra recorded 21 new cases and now has 506 active infections. Pune, Mumbai, and Thane remain the most affected districts. The state also reported one death, bringing its total for 2025 to seven matching Kerala’s toll.
States with Mild Surges and Precautionary Advisories
West Bengal reported the second-highest daily increase with 44 new cases and now has 331 active infections. No deaths were reported. Gujarat followed closely with 338 active cases, though the state has not reported any fatalities in the last 24 hours.
Karnataka reported a Covid-related death involving a 63-year-old man with comorbid conditions. The government has issued public advisories encouraging the use of masks and social distancing in crowded spaces.
Other states like Odisha (12 active cases), Andhra Pradesh (advisory issued), Punjab (six cases with one death), and Haryana’s Gurugram (12 cases) have also seen slight upticks. Gurugram’s recent increase marks its first significant surge in over two years. In total, 28 deaths related to Covid-19 have been confirmed in India since the beginning of 2025.
According to ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl, genome sequencing has revealed that Omicron subvariants LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1 are currently dominant. These variants are not believed to cause severe disease. Health officials across the country maintain that the majority of infections are manageable at home, and hospitalisation remains limited. A total of 383 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing cautious optimism as monitoring and mitigation efforts continue.
