Chicago suburb Highland Park named one of the safest in new US ranking

A new study ranking the safest suburbs across the United States has placed Highland Park, a Chicago-area community, among the top locations for safety and quality of life. The ranking, compiled by financial planning company SmartAsset, analyzed 360 towns located within a 45-minute drive of a major U.S. city. Highland Park secured the 14th spot on the list, making it one of the standout safe suburbs in the nation.

The comprehensive ranking was based on several key factors, including violent crime rates, property crime rates, drug overdose deaths, traffic fatalities, and levels of excessive drinking. Beyond safety, the evaluation also considered housing affordability and local income levels, providing a well-rounded picture of which suburbs offer both security and livability.

The Midwest emerged as a strong performer in the report, with several towns recognized for their safety records. Indiana had an impressive showing, with Noblesville, Fishers, Carmel, and Brownsburg all placing within the top 20. These communities were noted for maintaining low crime rates while offering residents access to quality housing and amenities.

Although it did not make the top 20, Scottsburg, Indiana, received special mention for its extraordinary safety metrics. The town reported no violent crimes and only 10 property crimes among its 7,338 residents, highlighting its reputation as a quiet and secure place to live. Similarly, Canal Winchester, Ohio, earned recognition for having the second-lowest violent crime rate and the lowest property crime rate among all towns studied.

The study also highlighted suburbs around Des Moines, Iowa, for their exceptionally low rate of drug overdose deaths, setting them apart in terms of public health and safety. These findings reflect broader trends where certain suburban communities continue to lead in both safety measures and quality of life.

Highland Park’s inclusion in the top ranks underscores its ongoing commitment to maintaining a secure environment for residents. With low crime rates, strong community engagement, and a high standard of living, the suburb continues to be a desirable location for families and individuals seeking a safe place to call home. Its proximity to Chicago also allows residents to enjoy urban amenities while benefiting from the peace and stability of a suburban setting.

This latest safety ranking follows a separate report earlier this year that identified three Chicago suburbs as being among the wealthiest in the country, further showcasing the region’s appeal. The combination of safety, economic prosperity, and accessibility to a major metropolitan area makes Highland Park and similar suburbs attractive choices for those looking to settle down.

As urban centers continue to face challenges related to crime and other safety concerns, suburbs like Highland Park, Noblesville, Carmel, and Canal Winchester demonstrate how communities can thrive by prioritizing public safety and investing in local development. The report serves as a valuable guide for families, professionals, and retirees evaluating where to live while enjoying peace of mind.

The recognition of these Midwest suburbs not only celebrates their achievements but also sets a benchmark for other towns aiming to improve their quality of life indicators. With ongoing efforts to strengthen community ties and ensure public safety, towns on this list are expected to remain among the most desirable in the country for years to come.
