Sergio Gor formally assumed charge as the United States Ambassador to India on Monday, marking the beginning of a new diplomatic chapter between the two countries. Speaking shortly after taking office, Gor described the relationship between India and the United States as the most consequential global partnership of the century, underlining its growing importance across economic, strategic, and technological domains. He confirmed that fresh trade negotiations between the two sides are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, signaling renewed momentum in discussions that have drawn attention in recent weeks.

Gor acknowledged that trade remains a central pillar of bilateral engagement, while also emphasizing that the relationship extends well beyond commerce. He noted that negotiations are complex given India’s scale and economic diversity, but stressed that both governments remain determined to reach mutually beneficial outcomes. According to him, while trade talks are critical, cooperation will continue across a wide range of sectors including security, counterterrorism, energy, technology, education, and health, reflecting the breadth of shared priorities between the two democracies.

In a significant development, Gor announced that India will be invited to join Pax Silica, a US-led strategic coalition focused on building a secure and resilient silicon supply chain. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration on critical minerals, energy inputs, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and logistics. Several major economies, including Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Israel, joined the initiative last month. Gor said India is expected to be invited as a full member next month, highlighting Washington’s interest in deeper cooperation with New Delhi on future-facing technologies and supply chain resilience.

The ambassador’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of the pace of progress in India-US trade negotiations. Addressing concerns raised recently by senior US officials about delays in finalizing a trade agreement, Gor struck a conciliatory tone. He said the two nations are bound not only by shared interests but also by a relationship anchored at the highest political levels. He added that disagreements are natural between close partners, but emphasized that such differences are ultimately resolved through dialogue and mutual respect.

Gor also referred to the US administration’s broader diplomatic approach, noting that the current year has been framed as one focused on reciprocity. He said this reflects an effort to raise standards in diplomacy through fair trade practices, mutual respect, and shared security commitments. He confirmed that officials on both sides remain actively engaged in trade discussions, suggesting that talks are ongoing and substantive.

Sharing a personal note, Gor said he arrived in India with deep respect for the country and a clear objective of elevating the partnership to its next stage. He recalled his first visit to India in 2013, during which he traveled to several regions including Rajasthan and Punjab, experiences he said left a lasting impression. Gor added that he was enthusiastic about returning to India in his new role and expressed optimism about strengthening ties during his tenure.
