I Want Nayanthara: AIADMK MP's Controversial Remark on MK Stalin’s Initiative Sparks Outrage

AIADMK MP C Ve Shanmugam has sparked a major controversy with his misogynistic comment on popular actor Nayanthara while criticizing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s “tell us your dream” initiative, which is part of the government's outreach campaign ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. The initiative involves volunteers visiting homes to gather feedback and suggestions on governance.

Shanmugam, a former minister, took a dig at the scheme during statewide protests organized by AIADMK, alleging that the initiative would not fulfill "real dreams." He mockingly asked, “I want Nayanthara, will you fulfill? Will he (MK Stalin) fulfill someone’s dream to marry Nayanthara?” This comment has been widely condemned as disrespectful and misogynistic.

The AIADMK MP’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism from the ruling DMK, with spokesperson Dr. Syed Hafeezullah denouncing the comments as an insult to all women. He stated that while it’s acceptable to criticize policies, it’s unacceptable to vulgarize women. He further urged the AIADMK to take action against Shanmugam.

Though the AIADMK has not yet issued an official statement, a spokesperson distanced the party from Shanmugam’s remarks, stating that such comments should not be defended. This isn’t the first time Shanmugam has courted controversy regarding women. Last year, he faced backlash for suggesting that CM MK Stalin might promise a “free wife” as part of his election campaign.

Shanmugam’s recent comments have sparked widespread outrage, calling attention to the regressive and misogynistic tone often seen in political discourse. As the Tamil Nadu elections draw near, the row over Shanmugam's remarks has added fuel to the political fire, with many questioning the treatment of women in political discussions.
