1,500 Killed in Lebanon as Israel Rejects Ceasefire, Hezbollah on the Defensive

Israel has continued its relentless air strikes on Lebanon despite a two-week truce between the United States and Iran. The truce, which covered various issues like sanctions and aerial attacks, did not include Lebanon, where Israel's military has intensified operations. On 8th April 2026, Israel launched the heaviest strikes on Lebanon in recent weeks, targeting over 100 Hezbollah command centers and military sites in Beirut. The attacks caused widespread panic in the capital, reminding many of Israel's 1982 invasion of Beirut.

The latest strikes have led to significant casualties, with at least 89 people killed and over 700 wounded, including many civilians. Among the dead were at least 130 children and more than 100 women, highlighting the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict. Israeli officials have confirmed that their operations against Hezbollah will continue, stating that the ceasefire agreement does not apply to Lebanon.

Since March 2, when Hezbollah began firing rockets in solidarity with Iran, Israel has escalated its campaign in southern Lebanon, issuing evacuation orders for around 15% of Lebanese territory. The strikes have already displaced over 1.2 million people, with the majority fleeing from the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has resulted in over 1,500 deaths across Lebanon, including more than 400 Hezbollah fighters. Despite the heavy toll, Israel remains committed to its military objectives, including the occupation of southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, which Israel considers a necessary "security zone" to protect its northern residents. As the battle rages on, Iran has warned that it may withdraw from the ceasefire agreement if Israel continues its attacks on Lebanon.
