Special Parliament Session Live: Opposition Unites Against Delimitation, Supports Women’s Reservation
The Special Parliament Session, set to run from April 16 to 18, has kicked off with significant debates surrounding the government’s proposed amendments. One of the most anticipated legislative pieces is the operationalization of the Women’s Reservation Act, which aims to ensure 33% representation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies by 2029. Alongside this, a Constitution amendment bill will be presented on the first day of the session, marking the beginning of what promises to be a contentious discussion.
Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, took the floor to address concerns regarding the delimitation provisions of the bill. Rijiju reassured the House that the delimitation exercise would be fair to all states and communities, seeking to quell the rising speculations and rumors that have been circulating. His statements came as part of the ongoing effort to allay fears about the impact of population-based seat allocation on various states, particularly those with lower growth rates.
The government’s push for the delimitation exercise has raised alarms among opposition parties, even as they express strong support for the women’s reservation aspect of the bill. Several opposition groups have united in their opposition to the bill’s provisions on delimitation, arguing that the move is politically motivated and could unfairly shift political power among states. They have called for a reevaluation of the provisions, arguing that they could reduce the political strength of certain regions.
With the NDA holding 292 seats in the Lok Sabha, compared to the opposition’s 233, the two-thirds majority requirement for passing the bills has put the spotlight on the numbers. This sharp divide in the House promises to lead to intense debates and possibly a heated voting session over the next few days.
As the session progresses, all eyes will be on how the government navigates the opposition’s concerns, particularly on the issue of delimitation, and whether the bills can be passed smoothly or will face significant resistance. Stay tuned for live updates and developments as India’s lawmakers deliberate on these critical issues.
