Udhayanidhi Stalin Repeats Controversial Sanatan Remarks in Tamil Nadu Assembly

The controversy surrounding Sanatan Dharma was reignited in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, with DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin advocating once again for the ‘eradication of Sanatan’ on the floor of the house. His remarks, made on the first day of the assembly session post the 2026 state elections, mirrored his earlier controversial comments, where he likened Sanatan Dharma to diseases like dengue and malaria. These statements sparked widespread outrage, particularly from the BJP, which has continuously criticized Stalin for mocking the faith of millions.

While Stalin’s comments drew immediate backlash, the political and legal implications are less immediate than before. Under the protection of Article 194 of the Indian Constitution, state legislators enjoy certain privileges within the assembly, including immunity from court proceedings for remarks made during legislative sessions. This legal safeguard limits the immediate legal consequences for Stalin’s controversial statements, a point emphasized by BJP leaders like Amit Malviya. The BJP’s national convenor criticized Stalin for using the assembly as a platform to target Sanatan Dharma, arguing that while Stalin may be shielded legally, there will be a political price to pay for mocking the faith of millions.

Vijay Watches as BJP Reacts to Stalin’s Remarks

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who was present in the assembly during the controversial remark, remained silent. The political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu has been charged, with BJP leaders like Vinoj P Selvam and Narayan Tirupathy reacting strongly to Stalin’s rhetoric. Selvam claimed that Stalin’s anti-Sanatan remarks were a key factor in the DMK’s loss of power, asserting that it was the DMK, not Sanatan Dharma, that had been “eradicated” in the state. Similarly, Tirupathy echoed the sentiment, pointing out that it was Stalin’s own words that led to the DMK’s decline in power.

Stalin’s remarks, once again, have sparked a fierce debate about the intersection of politics and religion in Tamil Nadu. While the legal immunity offers temporary protection, the long-term political consequences remain to be seen. The BJP continues to build its case against Stalin, and Tamil Nadu's political future seems shaped by the fallout from these remarks.
