Summit Postponed Due to Ebola Outbreak
The Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit, originally scheduled to take place in New Delhi from May 28, 2026, has been postponed due to an escalating Ebola outbreak in several African countries. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s South Kivu province has reported the latest cases, contributing to concerns about regional health security. India and the African Union, following consultations with the AU Chairperson and the African Union Commission, agreed that it would be prudent to reschedule the summit to ensure the safety of all participants.
The decision reflects heightened global awareness of public health threats, particularly those with potential international impact. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in strengthening public health preparedness and response capacities, including support for Africa CDC and national health institutions across the continent.
Ebola Outbreak and Public Health Measures
The outbreak is primarily driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which, while less common than the virulent Zaire strain responsible for the 2014-2016 West African epidemic, remains highly contagious and lethal. India has not reported any Ebola cases, but the Ministry of Health has intensified national surveillance and preparedness measures. States and Union Territories have been instructed to implement standard operating procedures for pre-arrival and post-arrival screening, quarantine protocols, case management, referral mechanisms, and laboratory testing. These measures aim to prevent any possible importation and spread of the virus within the country.
