Louisiana parade crash injures 18 during Lao New Year celebration
At least 18 people were hospitalized after a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians during a Lao New Year parade in New Iberia, authorities said. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, April 4, 2026, at the intersection of Savannakhet Street and Melancon Road, according to a statement from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. The event was part of a community celebration marking the Buddhist New Year and had drawn a large crowd.

Officials confirmed that the driver, identified as 57-year-old Todd Landry of Jeanerette, Louisiana, was taken into custody at the scene. He faces multiple charges, including driving while impaired, first-degree negligent injuring, careless operation, and possession of an open container. Investigators said Landry showed signs of impairment and provided a breath sample indicating a blood alcohol level of 0.137%, which exceeds Louisiana’s legal limit of 0.08%.

Authorities reported that several individuals sustained injuries, some believed to be serious, though no fatalities were immediately confirmed. Preliminary findings indicate that the incident does not appear to have been intentional, and the investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the full circumstances.

In a public statement, Jeff Landry expressed concern for those affected and gratitude for emergency responders. Liz Murrill also stated that her office would coordinate with law enforcement agencies and offer support to those impacted.

Event organizers canceled scheduled evening music programs following the crash, citing safety concerns and respect for victims. In a statement shared online, organizers said they were deeply saddened and were awaiting further information from authorities while extending prayers to the injured and their families.

Witnesses described a sudden shift from celebration to chaos. Eli Anderson, who attended the parade, told a local broadcaster that he was only feet away when the vehicle entered the crowd. He said the atmosphere had been festive moments earlier, with music and people walking along the parade route, before the situation escalated unexpectedly.
