At least 16 people were killed on May 6 when a passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker and burst into flames in North Musi Rawas Regency on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, officials said.
The crash triggered a large fire that engulfed both vehicles, leaving several others injured. Emergency teams transported the wounded to nearby hospitals, with at least three reported to have suffered severe burns.
Local disaster management authorities said 14 of the victims were bus passengers, while two were in the tanker. The exact time of the incident was not immediately confirmed.
Preliminary findings suggest a tire on the bus may have burst, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into the tanker, which was carrying diesel fuel. The impact led to an immediate blaze, complicating rescue efforts.
Firefighters and rescue workers arrived at the scene but struggled to contain the flames due to the intensity of the fire, officials said.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
