ICMR Deploys AI Tool Under National One Health Mission to Predict Pandemics

In a major step towards enhancing India's pandemic preparedness, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is rolling out an AI-enabled pathogen surveillance tool under the National One Health Mission (NOHM). This innovative system aims to monitor emerging and novel pathogens to predict and track diseases before they spiral into full-blown outbreaks. The focus is on early detection of zoonotic diseases, viral diseases, bacterial infections, and even parasitic threats that can have far-reaching public health consequences.

Traditionally, India’s response to pandemics has been reactive, often addressing issues only after cases have surged. With the introduction of AI-based surveillance, the government aims to shift towards a proactive, predictive approach. The goal is to identify patterns, track unusual clusters, and assess environmental factors that contribute to disease outbreaks in humans, animals, and the environment.

The AI tool will monitor a wide range of pathogens, including viral diseases like Zika, Nipah, and Coronavirus. On the bacterial side, infections such as anthrax and plague will be tracked, alongside parasitic diseases like Kala Azar. This system will connect data from various sectors to detect early warning signs, offering a comprehensive safety net against potential outbreaks.

By integrating AI into public health surveillance, India is moving towards a predictive model of disease monitoring. This shift will allow authorities to assess risks faster, prepare in advance, and mitigate potential threats before they escalate, marking a significant change in the country’s approach to handling public health crises.
