Clover Hill Dairy Cheese Recall List Covers 5 States and D.C.

The Clover Hill Dairy cheese recall list now includes the company’s entire cheese line after officials linked the outbreak strain of Listeria to nine illnesses and one Maryland death. More than two dozen cheeses sold in five states and Washington, D.C., are affected.

Clover Hill Dairy Cheese Recall List and Sales Locations

Maryland health officials said the Mechanicsville-based dairy voluntarily expanded an earlier recall to cover all cheese products. Consumers, retailers and restaurants should not eat, sell or serve the recalled cheese. Food prepared with the products should also be discarded.

The cheese may have been sold at the company’s retail market, farmers’ markets and through third-party distributors in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

Shoppers should look for the Clover Hill Dairy name or manufacturer permit or plant number 24-128. Products may also carry the KESSO, QUESOS LA RICURA, IZALCO, DE MI PUEBLO or RIO LINDO names.

Which Clover Hill Dairy Cheeses Are Recalled?

The recall includes cuajada, soft cuajada, ricotta or requesón, jalapeño ricotta, cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, Marble Jack, cheese curds, snack packs, horseradish cheese, Old Bay cheddar, jalapeño cheddar, Pepper Jack and Sizzlin’ Colby.

The Maryland Department of Health previously issued an advisory covering requesón and soft ricotta products and said it was conducting follow-up evaluations at the facility.

Listeria Symptoms and High-Risk Groups

Officials said nine people in several states were infected with the outbreak strain, including one person who died in Maryland in 2023. Listeria monocytogenes can grow under refrigeration and may spread to other foods and kitchen surfaces.

Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Severe illness can cause headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions.

Pregnant women, newborns, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of serious illness. Symptoms may begin within days or take as long as two months to appear.

Anyone who ate a recalled product and develops symptoms consistent with listeriosis should contact a healthcare provider. The expanded recall is significant because the cheeses were distributed through several sales channels across a broad regional market.
