Utah Mall Stabbing Leaves Indian Muslim Worker Critically Injured

An Indian Muslim kiosk worker was critically injured in an alleged religiously motivated stabbing at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah, on Monday, July 13, 2026.

The worker, identified by friends as Sohail, was hospitalized after suffering multiple stab wounds. Court records say the suspect told investigators that he selected Sohail because he was Muslim.

Witnesses Describe Valley Fair Mall Attack

Witnesses said the attacker approached Sohail at his kiosk and asked where he was from and whether he was Muslim. Sohail reportedly said he was from India and confirmed his faith.

The man then allegedly asked for water. When Sohail turned to retrieve it, the attacker pulled out a knife and stabbed him repeatedly, according to witness accounts.

Police found Sohail bleeding heavily from wounds across his body. Bystanders intervened, restrained the attacker and held him until officers arrived.

Sohail Hospitalized in Critical Condition

Sohail was transported to a hospital in critical condition and underwent multiple surgeries.

A fundraising page organized by a friend said Sohail was stabbed 15 times. The page described him as the primary financial provider for his wife and two young children.

His latest medical condition was not provided in the available information.

Peter Michael Larsen Accused of Targeting Muslim Worker

Authorities identified the suspect as Peter Michael Larsen, 48. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct.

According to the arrest affidavit, Larsen admitted selecting Sohail because of his religion and allegedly said he intended to kill Muslims.

Police described Larsen as a substantial danger to the public, citing his alleged ideology, the violent nature of the attack and references to possible mass-casualty violence.

Larsen received medical treatment for injuries sustained while bystanders restrained him.

Previous Armed Confrontation Cited in Records

Records indicate that Larsen previously served prison time following a 2022 confrontation in which he allegedly threatened firefighters and police officers while armed with a shotgun. He was released in January 2025.

The earlier case may be considered by authorities as prosecutors evaluate the current allegations and any potential public-safety risks.

Investigation Into Alleged Anti-Muslim Attack Continues

The investigation remains active, and the allegations against Larsen have not been proven in court. The available information does not indicate whether additional charges, including charges specifically connected to religious bias, will be filed.

Authorities are expected to continue reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage and the suspect’s alleged comments as Sohail recovers from his injuries.
