The Mahayuti alliance recorded a sweeping victory in the Maharashtra local body elections, winning 207 municipal president posts across the state and establishing strong control over urban local governance. Results from the State Election Commission showed the Bharatiya Janata Party leading the tally with 117 seats, making it the single-largest party in the polls. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena followed with 53 posts, while the Nationalist Congress Party secured 37, giving the ruling alliance a decisive edge in municipal councils and nagar panchayats.
The election outcome marks another setback for the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi bloc, which managed to win only 44 municipal president posts. Within the alliance, the Congress secured 28, the NCP under Sharad Pawar won seven, and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena ended with nine seats. Independents claimed five posts, while other smaller registered parties took 32 combined seats across the state.
Elections were held for 286 of the 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, with two candidates elected unopposed. In Pune district, the NCP captured 10 out of 17 president posts, reflecting regional gains within the alliance structure. The results emphasise the growing influence of Mahayuti across Maharashtra’s urban centres, building on momentum from the previous Assembly polls.
Top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed gratitude to voters and described the victory as an endorsement of development-focused governance. Narendra Modi stated that Maharashtra has shown strong trust in the alliance and highlighted the government’s commitment to public welfare, economic growth and infrastructure progress. Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the results as a reflection of good governance and congratulated Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.
The performance of the MVA parties signals continued challenges in regaining voter confidence, particularly in key urban areas where the Mahayuti has strengthened its base. Political observers note that the results could influence future electoral strategies ahead of national and state elections. With clear public support behind the ruling alliance, Mahayuti leaders have vowed to build on the victory and expand development initiatives across the state.
